Zakopane is highest located Polish city, which has been informally known as the winter capital of Poland for a long time. This is the largest municipal complex in the direct vicinity of the Tatra Mountains; thanks to this, it is the centre of winter sports. In the summer, the city attracts hundreds of tourists, amateur mountain trekkers and climbers and lovers of beautiful landscape and regional culture. A major part of the Tatra National Park is located within the administrative borders of the city. Apart from the magnificent Tatra Mountains, tourists frequently visit local fairs to purchase regional products, such as oscypek (traditional ewe's milk cheese).
Whilst visiting Zakopane, it is also worthwhile to walk to Lake Morskie Oko or take a cable-car ride to Kasprowy Wierch, known as the Holy Mountain of Skiers, or visit Gubałówka.
