John Paul II was the first pope from Poland and the first bishop of Rome who was not Italian in 455 years. The hallmark of John Paul II's pontificate were foreign travels. He made 104 such trips, visiting all inhabited continents. He devoted a lot of time to building unity among Christian Churches; he willingly met with young people and paid them a lot of attention.
Wadowice is the home town of the greatest Pole of the 20th century. Karol Wojtyła very attached to the town of his childhood. As the pope, he came back here three times during his pilgrimages to his home country. During one of them, he said: Here, in this town, in Wadowice, everything started. Life started, school started, studies started, theatre started and priesthood started.
The sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska was established at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1999, it was entered in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The sanctuary comprises a Baroque basilica with the painting of the Virgin Mary of Kalwaria, a monastery and a complex of churches and chapels arranged in a picturesque landscape known as the Kalwaria paths. It was modelled upon the Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem.
Łagiewniki - The sanctuary of Divine Mercy is related to the life and activity of St. Faustina Kowalska. Since the 1940's, it has been a pilgrimage destination related to the presence of the famous painting of the Merciful Jesus and the grave of St. Faustina. The life of John Paul II was tied, in a unique manner, to the mystery of Divine Mercy. It was an important element of his pontificate.
