The Historic Salt Mine in Bochnia is the oldest mine in which extraction of rock salt was commenced. The beginnings of the mine date back to 1248. After almost eight centuries of exploitation, it resembles a unique underground town, enrapturing with original pits, chapels hewn in salt rocks and exceptional sculptures and equipment. The mine can be visited on foot as well as with the use of an underground railway and by boat. The route encompasses the most beautiful and most interesting pits located on level IV August (176 m below ground level) and on level VI Sienkiewicz (223 m below ground level). There are unique chambers with characteristic shapes and a geological layout, exhibitions of former mining machines, equipment and chapels with beautiful sculptures and paintings.
